Again violence with hindi speakers

Again violence with hindi speakers in Maharashtra

There has been an uptick in violent events involving non-Marathi speakers in Maharashtra. In Mumbai and Thane, individuals who do not speak Marathi are being ridiculed and assaulted in the name of language. At Thane station, two Hindi speakers were forced to perform sit-ups while holding their ears following a dispute with a Marathi-speaking individual. In another episode, Rajan Vichare, a Shiv Sena MP affiliated with Uddhav Thackeray, had a shopkeeper who did not speak Hindi detained and made him perform sit-ups while holding his ears. Although both Hindi speakers offered their apologies, the MP slapped them. In light of these occurrences, a minister in the Maharashtra government has declared that "one must speak Marathi." He further stated that any disrespect towards Marathi in Maharashtra would lead to legal consequences and action would be taken. The minister also urged individuals not to take matters into their own hands and to report the individual in question.
